Water Meter Replacement

Keeping Your Water Safe Starts at Home

Your water utility is replacing outdated water meters throughout the community, including the meter at your property. This upgrade will improve accuracy, enhance billing efficiency, and help conserve water resources. As water meters reach the end of their service life, replacement ensures continued reliable service and supports long-term improvements to water infrastructure.

Yes. It is the responsibility of the property owners to test their existing shut-off valve for proper operation. If the valve is not functioning properly, repairs should be made prior to the installation. If an old or damaged shut-off valve is broken during meter replacement, repairs are the responsibility of the homeowner.

Before your appointment:

  • Ensure the meter technician can access your water meter, which is typically located in your basement, crawlspace, or mechanical room.
  • Clear at least 3 feet of space surrounding the water meter.
  • Keep all pets contained during the installation.
  • Make sure someone is home during the scheduled window.

The new water meter will measure your water use more accurately. In some cases, older meters under-report usage, so your bill may reflect your actual water consumption more closely after installation.

During the process of your water meter exchange, service will be briefly interrupted. This interruption causes a pressure change, that can break sediment loose within the service line. Below is a set of instructions to flush the water distribution system.

Flushing instructions after meter exchange:

  1. Open your nearest outside hose spigot and let run, if applicable.
  2. With outside spigot still running, move to the lowest non-aerated faucet (bathtub or slop sink) let cold water run.
  3. If a non-aerated faucet is unavailable remove aerator (little screen screwed onto the end of each faucet).
  4. Continue with cold water faucets, one by one, until you systematically open all faucets throughout your home.
  5. Allow all faucets to run simultaneously for a minimum of five minutes.
  6. Turn off each faucet, beginning at the highest level of your home.
  7. Clean and re-install all aerators.

IMPORTANT:

  • Do NOT drink water during the flushing process.
  • Do not use hot water until flushing is complete.
